The benefits of baking soda for cleaning


Baking soda can be used to clean many surfaces around the home. It is a cheap alternative to cleaning products with too many harsh chemicals. Baking soda can be used as an impressive cleaning agent that can scour and deodorize parts of the home. You can use it to shine your sink, and even shine accessories such as jewellery and watches. It could also come in handy when doing laundry and even when removing strong smells from surfaces such as onions and garlic.

What is baking soda made of?

Baking soda is made up of only one chemical compound called sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). It is a white crystalline powder and is classified as an acid salt. Due to its physical and chemical properties, baking soda can be used for a variety of things besides cleaning. It can be used for deodorizing, buffering, and fire extinguishing.

Baking soda has the ability to remove grease, dirt, and many sticky substances by dissolving these compounds. It also neutralizes odours chemically, instead of masking them. The mineral structure of each particle of baking soda can clean without leaving scratches behind because it produces a gentle abrasive.

How it can be used:

Clean bathroom sink and tub

Pour baking soda onto the surface your sink or bathtub. Wit the use of a sponge or a brush, scrub the surface removing dirt and grime, leaving your sink and tub good as new. If you want to also add a scent to your shiny tub, you could include lemon essential oil t your baking soda mixture and follow the same steps.

Kitchen sink

Add baking soda to the kitchen sink surface. If you lack experience in cleaning different sink surfaces such as porcelain or ceramic test a small area first. Using a brush or a sponge scrub the surface and watch the food and grease disappear.

Remove odours from carpets and rugs

It is very likely for carpets and rugs to have funny smells due everyone’s use including pets. To remove caret odour mix baking soda with a few drops of lavender essential oil and sprinkle it on the surface of your carpet or rug. Allow the product to remain on the surface for at least 30 mins and vacuum the surface.

Create your own deodorizer in the fridge

You can keep your baking soda in your fridge to remove food odours. Mix a cup of baking soda and lemon essential oil and keep them in a jar or container. Store it in the fridge for a month and use it to clean your toilet or sink. Follow these steps again to create as many deodorizers as you want.

Remove odours from your bin can

After mixing an essential oil with your baking soda for added fragrance and sprinkle it on the bottom of a bin can. Make sure you replace the baking soda every few weeks. As an alternative to pouring baking soda in your bin, you could pour it into a small cardboard box that fits your bin and place in the bottom of your bin can.

Clean and remove stains from pots and pans

The outside of your pots and pans may be shiny, but after much use, the inside could go from shiny to brown due to heat and food. To clean the interior and remove stains, you could fill your pots with water and pour in baking soda (approximately 1/3 of a cup). Boil your water and baking soda mix and don’t forget to turn off the heat. After half an hour, empty the water into your sink, and pour baking soda into the wet interior. Scrub the surface of your pot with a sponge and rinse thoroughly.
