Who is Eileen Gu?

Eileen Gu, also known by her Chinese name Gu Ailing, is a two-time Olympic gold medallist in freestyle skiing. Born to a Chinese mother and an American father, she represents China despite being born and raised in San Francisco, USA.

In 2019, Gu decided that it was best for her to compete for China, where her mother grew up; even though China hasn’t been a powerhouse in the Winter Olympics. Gu plans to rise above the geopolitical divide between the US and China and hopes to use her platform to inspire more young girls to partake in freeskiing. She has 2 million followers on Weibo, the most popular social media platform in China.

Eileen Gu Celebrates Women's Big Air Event Win

Along with her exceptional talent, the 18-year-old has hit headlines because of controversy surrounding her multicultural background. As she works to bridge the gap between her two countries, American critics had “Eileen Gu traitor” trending in the US due to her success with China instead of her birth country as they urge her to “pick a side”. She confronted the situation by saying “I’m not trying to keep everyone happy” and “My mission is to use sport as a force for unity, not as a divisive force”

Performance in winter Olympics 2022

Even amongst the media storm, Gu has still management to become the first freestyle skier to win three medals at a single winter Olympics. All of this in her first Winter Olympic games. The young star has received a gold medal in the big air event and a gold medal in the halfpipe event. She also took home a silver medal in the slopestyle competition. She even made history and became the youngest Olympic champion in freestyle skiing.

The 18-year-old said “It has been two straight weeks of the most intense highs and lows I’ve ever experienced in my life” she also expressed that “it has changed my life forever. The second I landed the last 16 in big air I knew my life was never going to be the same. Even then I would have never imagined that I’d walk away with another silver and another gold”

Eileen Gu Wins Winter Olympic Gold Medal

What does her future hold?

There was no question that her halfpipe was a gold medal. In fact her runs were so great that the judges needed extra time to score her first place. However, Gu isn’t clear on what her immediate future holds. She believes she has many huge goals coming up in the future as she’s a very goal oriented person. Her goals include attending Stanford University, continuing her career in both skiing and the fashion industry and continue being a “nerd” as she writes in the hope of getting some of her writing published. Whatever she chooses to do, she has inspired many young girls and has solidified herself as the best freestyle skier in the world.
